On March 3,1991,motorist Rodney King’s savage beating by LAPD was captured by resident George Holliday. The public release of the footage and its international reach could arguably make the11minute clip the world’s first ‘viral’ video. The acquittal of all four officers the following spring was the match that ignited the L.A. uprisings of April,1992. These seminal moments in L.A.history are a necessary reference point for today’s reinvigorated civil rights movement against racially motivated violence in law enforcement.

VIRAL: 25 Years From Rodney King, is an exhibition and community arts project conceived by Bay Area based artist and educator Daryl Elaine Wells. VIRAL features more than 80 pieces of visual art as well as music, video, and interactive games in response to incidents of police violence by internationally recognized and emerging artists. The exhibition is on view from September 16 to October 22, with an opening celebration on Friday, October 7, 2016 from 6-9pm featuring storytelling and live performances to mark the 6 year anniversary of Betti Ono. Public programs and related special events will take place during the exhibition run, culminating in a community day of action on October 22, 2016 in conjunction with National Day of Protest Against Police Violence.

The five artists of  this is not not about you engage a single viewer through painting, sculpture, performance and text. Whether creating  for a specific person or a theoretical audience, these artists traverse love, desire and friendship as a process of making. The work addresses the audience by naming, depicting or enticing this narrow viewership. The resulting show engages the audience by providing access to this conversational, insular world. Crossing mythical waters or social media, this work calls out and waits for a response.

Proof Of Purchase at Samsøn Projects April 3-5

Added on by Molly Segal.

I am participating in SMFA's fundraiser Proof of Purchase at Samsøn Projects in SOWA along with talented friends Annie Blazejack, Juan Travieso, Carl Vestweber, Amy Flaherty, Laura Fischman, Raul Gonzales, and many many many more!

Samsøñ will host Proof of Purchase to benefit SMFA April 3–5, 2014. The twist? You don't know the identity of the artist until you make the purchase. With all the art priced ($50) and sized (4x6 inches) the same, the piece you fall in love with might be by a current student or by a famous artist.

The School's last Proof of Purchase event was a great success, with postcard submissions from as far as China, Colombia, and India. Thank you to everyone who participated, and we can't wait to see you this year!

Proof of Purchase, April 3–5, 2014
April 3: Opening Reception 7–9 pm
April 4: 11 am–8 pm (SoWa First Friday)
April 5: 11 am–6 pm

Location: Samsøñ, 450 Harrison Avenue, #29, Boston, MA 02118
